Carte de visite and cabinet card photographs were primarily monochromatic - in a sepia tint. Commercial colour photography was not available in the Victorian era. However, many artists, colourists and photographers were able to over-paint sepia photographs to create beautiful portraits in full or partial colour. This section contains hand coloured photographs of different qualities – from the exquisite to the downright clumsy.

All of the images within this category, and many more besides, are from the Victorian Image Collection. All images are available as an automated digital download for Commercial Use or for Personal Use. They are also available as a Metal Sign, Mouse Mat or Quality Print within Gifts.
