![]() VICTORIAN PHOTOGRAPHERS - PROCESSES Commercial Digital Download Three significant Victorian photographic processes were Autotype, Chromotype and Tintype. Autotypes were introduced in the mid 1870s and were produced by a limited number of up-market Victorian photographers, but only for a few years. Chromotypes were introduced in 1875 and were produced by a limited number of up-market Victorian photographers. They remained popular for only a few years. Both Autotypes and Chromotypes were beautifully distinctive and permanent processes. Tintype photographs were invented as early as 1855 and finally fell out of use in the UK soon after the second world war – having been used at that time by beach photographers because the process was capable of producing instant results. They were aimed at the less wealthy end of the market as they were cheap to produce and were rather ‘muddy’ and dark in appearance. All of the images within this category, and many more besides, are from the Victorian Image Collection.
